I’ve never been a believer in a linear career trajectory; I simply have too many interests to stay on one straight path. Instead, during the more than 10 years that I’ve worked in communications, I’ve veered off as often as I could, building a wide-range of experiences under the communications umbrella that include everything from writing to styling and editing to public relations, through various positions I’ve held over the years, as a freelancer and employee.
Fueled by a passion for all things lifestyle, I majored in journalism at the University of Rhode Island before joining the editorial staff of Rhode Island Monthly magazine. There, I honed my writing and editing skills as the editorial assistant and, later, the copy editor, developing and working on stories on a vast range of topics, from food to fashion to home that fit within the magazine’s brand, while also employing an unyielding attention to detail in editing the entire magazine, as well as various e-newsletters and in-house publications, for grammar and style. I worked with freelance writers to assign articles and wrote and edited service features and shorter front-of-the-book pieces throughout the year.
It was also where I got my start as a stylist, working with the magazine’s art director and freelance photographers to execute several shoots, the results of which were used on the magazine’s cover and for features and other departments.
To this day, I maintain a relationship with the magazine, styling the fashion shoot for its Engaged wedding publication, including the cover, for several years, and writing regularly for both Engaged and the Rhode Island Monthly title.
I also currently serve as contributing editor at Rhode Island Monthly, overseeing the magazine’s monthly home and garden editorial coverage. I work with the editor, art director and local architects and designers to come up with ideas for monthly features, write all content and help coordinate photo shoots.
I received my master’s in communication studies in 2010 and went to work in the Office of University Communications at Brown University, where, for four years, I covered the University’s arts, humanities and social sciences news. My primary responsibilities included working with faculty and administrators to strategize communications plans and produce press releases and feature stories, pitching to media, editing content to post on the Brown news site, working with the web and social media teams to determine content for the Brown homepage and social media channels, and working with the staff photographer and videographer to find unique ways to illustrate these stories, all within the fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment of the news office
For the past several years, I have also done freelance writing and communications consulting work for local and national clients, including Reebok, the Providence Lady Project, Westchester Properties Real Estate Group and Ananda Hair Lounge. My work in this role has included web-based content creation, strategy, copyediting and social media.
My worldview is aesthetically driven. I swoon over good design and obsessively follow trends in many of the creative industries, including fashion, home design and food. My background in journalism has made me a self-professed news junkie and on any given day, my consumption of media swings between everything from the New York Times and CNN to New York magazine, Food and Wine, WhoWhatWear, Domaine and Cupcakes and Cashmere.
